What is a chemical peel?
A peel exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath. We offer professional peel treatments designed to enhance skin texture, tone, and clarity. With a wide range of peels available, each targeting specific skin concerns, these treatments provide effective, tailored solutions for anyone looking to improve their complexion. Whether you're seeking to address acne, fine lines, pigmentation, or uneven skin texture, our peels offer a powerful, non-invasive way to refresh and rejuvenate your skin with noticeable results.
What ingredients are used in peels?
Glycolic Acid: Derived from sugar cane, glycolic acid is one of the most effective alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) used to exfoliate and improve skin texture. It penetrates deeply to remove dead skin cells, stimulate collagen production, and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
Salicylic Acid: This beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) is ideal for acne-prone skin. Its oil-soluble properties allow it to penetrate deep into pores, helping to exfoliate and clear blockages, reduce oil production, and prevent future breakouts. Salicylic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective for treating acne lesions and blackheads.
Lactic Acid: A milder AHA, lactic acid helps improve skin hydration, texture, and tone. Itâs particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin, gently exfoliating while helping to reduce pigmentation and improve overall skin clarity.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA): TCA peels are medium-strength treatments that offer more intensive results. TCA targets deeper layers of skin to address sun damage, deep wrinkles, and skin imperfections. It is often used to treat advanced pigmentation issues and to promote the production of new, youthful skin.
Vitamin C: Found in some Institut DERMed peels, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to brighten the skin, even out tone, and combat oxidative damage caused by sun exposure and environmental pollutants. It also helps stimulate collagen synthesis for firmer, smoother skin.
Pumpkin Enzyme: Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, pumpkin enzymes provide natural exfoliation by dissolving dead skin cells while nourishing the skin with antioxidants. This enzyme peel is ideal for sensitive skin, helping to improve texture and tone without irritation.
Retinol: A derivative of vitamin A, retinol is used in some Institut DERMed peels to boost collagen production, improve skin texture, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and sunspots. It also promotes cell turnover, aiding in the treatment of acne and hyperpigmentation.
Selecting Your Peel Option
If youâre new to peels with us, we recommend starting slow to allow your skin to adjust. Our peels are active and result-driven, so it's important to choose the right level for your experience and goals.
If youâre newer to skincare or havenât had a peel before, our Beginner 101 Beginner Peel is a great place to start. Itâs gentle, yet effective, and designed to introduce your skin to the process without overwhelming it.
For those of you who are more seasoned with skincare and have experience with professional peels, a 201 Advanced Peel might be the perfect fit. Itâs more advanced, and helps to tackle deeper skin concerns like fine lines and uneven texture.
If you're looking for dramatic results or need to address more intense skin concerns like deep pigmentation or scarring, a 301 Peel would be a great option. This peel is the most intensive and will provide the strongest resurfacing benefits, delivering noticeable improvements.
If youâve never had a peel with us before but have a consistent at home routine and have similar treatments elsewhere, we recommend starting with a 201 Advanced Peel. It's a great middle ground that offers noticeable results while still being well-suited for a first-time peel experience.
If you've already experienced our 201 or 301 peels and are looking to address more dramatic skin concerns, we recommend exploring our 5+ Layer Peels. These advanced treatments provide deeper exfoliation and more intense results.
Be prepared for more noticeable heat during the procedure and more significant peeling in the days following. This level of peel is designed to target deeper layers of the skin for those seeking more profound correction, especially for concerns like severe pigmentation, deep wrinkles, or scarring.
To prep your skin and get even more out of your peel, we suggest using our at-home peels from Institut DERMed. These products are perfect for conditioning your skin in advance of your treatment, helping to enhance the results youâll see in just one session.
In fact, incorporating weekly at-home peels between treatments can accelerate your results and help you achieve your skincare goals faster. By prepping your skin regularly at home, you can even work up to deeper peels sooner, saving you time and money while speeding up your journey to glowing, healthy skin.
We also offer our 301 Peel options as express leave on peels. which are shorter, with less steps, less cost and same results as our regular 301 options.
And remember, any peel can be enhanced by adding dermaplaning. Dermaplaning removes dead skin and peach fuzz, giving you an extra boost of smoothness and ensuring that your peel works even more effectively. Dermaplaning is NOT recommended for those who have consistent, active acne. A peel on it's own is the best solution to treat acne and acne scarring.
Preparing For Your Peel
Accutane users: This one's not for you! đ
Tanning or sunburns: Wait 2 weeks after any intense burn or tan. âď¸
No retinols, acids, or exfoliants for 3 days before. â
Topical meds (antibiotics, steroids, antifungals): Discontinue 10 days before. đ
Botox: Wait 2 weeks after; fillers: 4 weeks. đ
Chemical Peel Aftercare
Not ALL peel ranges will result in obvious peeling and flaking, inflammation or intense redness. Opting for our deeper peels such as 201 and 301 will increase these outcomes.
Protect Your Skin: Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours after your peel to allow your skin to recover and prevent irritation.
Limit Physical Activity: Refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours post-peel to avoid excessive sweating and irritation.
Hands Off: Resist the urge to touch, rub, peel, or pick at your skin. Let the natural peeling process occur without interference.
Gentle Skincare: For the first 7-10 days post-peel, avoid exfoliators, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, or any other potentially irritating products while your skin is still peeling.
Be Gentle with Hair Removal: For 2 weeks following your peel, avoid shaving, tweezing, or waxing to protect the newly revealed skin. If you'd like to avoid these areas during your peel treatment, just let us know, and we can tailor your service accordingly.
Let It Peel Naturally: Donât pull off peeling skin. If needed, you may gently trim the edges with scissors, but allow the rest to shed naturally.
How often should you peel?
For optimal results, we recommend incorporating weekly at-home peels into your skincare routine. These are a great way to maintain healthy skin and enhance your treatments. For more intensive correction, we suggest 301 peels annually to target deeper concerns and achieve dramatic improvements.
The 201 peel can be performed every 3-4 weeks, depending on your skin goals and concerns. For those looking for more dramatic corrections or ongoing maintenance of specific skin conditions, a series of 201 and 301 peels may be recommended. After completing the series, you can transition to a maintenance program to keep your skin in optimal condition.
Consider alternating your peels with other skin treatments based on your skinâs needs at the time. The best way to ensure you're on the right track is to consult with your skincare professional and create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique goals and skin concerns.
So you've had a peel, what's next?
Depending on your skin goals, peels can be a great option for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, brightening pigmentation, and treating acne or acne scarring. However, we also offer a variety of other treatments in addition to peels to help you achieve your specific skincare goals.
For accelerated results, youâll definitely want to incorporate cosmeceutical-grade skincare into your routine. These high-performance products can deeply nourish and support your skin, enhancing the effects of your treatments and helping you see faster, longer-lasting results.
If you're looking to address deeper skin concerns or enhance your skinâs overall appearance, microneedling is another great option. Microneedling helps to improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity by stimulating collagen production, making it an excellent treatment for scarring, large pores, and fine lines. Itâs also a fantastic way to enhance the results of peels and other skincare treatments.
