Questions About Laser Hair Removal? We’ve Got Answers

Comparing Laser Devices

Our GentleMax Pro uses focused laser technology (Alexandrite and YAG lasers) for precise and faster results, making it suitable for all skin and hair types. It’s more effective in fewer sessions, offering deeper penetration and more consistent hair reduction with minimal discomfort.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), on the other hand, uses broad-spectrum light and requires a gel during treatments to target hair pigment, making it effective for lighter skin and hair types but less precise and generally requires more treatments for optimal results. It may also be less effective on darker skin tones.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

At our clinic, we believe in transparency, which is why we recommend a sequence of 8 treatments for optimal results. This approach ensures we target hair in all growth phases, providing the best possible outcome for lasting hair reduction. After completing the full series, annual maintenance may be required to address any minor hair growth due to natural regeneration and hormonal fluctuations. Some clients may need maintenance sooner, while others can go longer between sessions.

Your first treatment will be rebooked in 4-6 weeks and subsequent treatments will become 1-2 weeks longer between, depending on your unique response.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Most people describe the sensation of laser hair removal as feeling like a quick elastic band snap against the skin. However, the GentleMax Pro system features a built-in cooling mechanism that uses cryogen gas, making the treatment not only safe and effective, but also comfortable. This cooling technology helps to minimize any discomfort, ensuring a smoother and more pleasant experience throughout the session.

Preparing For Your Laser Treatment

  • For 4 weeks: no tweezing, waxing/epilating/ using nair-like products.
  • For 2 weeks: No Citrus essential oils, st. johns wort, Avoid sun/use intentionally mineral based sunscreen to avoid a sun tan, no self tanner.
  • 5 days prior: no retinols/exfoliants.
  • Day of: no lotion/make up. Clean shave the area.

After Your Laser Treatment

There is no downtime with laser hair removal, and most clients are able to return to work the same day. You may feel a mild sunburn-like sensation, and it's normal to experience temporary reddening or edema (slight swelling), which can look like hives or welts around the hair follicles. This typically resolves within a few hours post-treatment.

To ensure optimal results and skin health, we recommend avoiding heat, friction, exfoliation, or hot showers for 24 hours after your session. Additionally, it's important to use sunscreen daily for at least 2 weeks post-treatment to protect your skin from UV damage. You can apply makeupimmediately after the treatment, as there is no restriction on that.

What Hair Types Laser Can Treat

Laser hair removal works best when there is contrast between the hair and skin, which allows the laser to effectively target the hair follicle. Unfortunately, lasers cannot effectively treat red, very blonde, or white/grey hair as they lack sufficient pigment for the laser to target. If you're unsure about your hair type, we offer complimentary test patches to assess the treatment's effectiveness on your hair.

It's important to note that light brown and even dark blonde hair can typically be treated successfully. Sometimes, hair may appear lighter due to light reflection, but this doesn't mean it can't be treated. Additionally, there's a common misunderstanding between light-colored hair and fine-textured hair. Fine hair, even if light in color, may still respond well to laser treatment. An in-person consultation is the best way to assess your hair and skin type and determine the most effective treatment plan for you.
